FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I start GI screening?

In Singapore, screening colonoscopy for colorectal cancer in people at average risk generally starts from age 50, in line with national recommendations.

However, some individuals may benefit from earlier colonoscopy, especially if they have symptoms (such as rectal bleeding or a persistent change in bowel habits), a strong family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, or certain medical conditions like inflammatory bowel disease; these decisions should be made in consultation with a doctor.

Internationally, several expert bodies have begun to lower the recommended starting age for average‑risk screening from 50 to 45 years because of rising colorectal cancer rates in younger adults, and this evolving evidence continues to be monitored by clinicians in Singapore.

[Check your screening eligibility]

Many early gastrointestinal conditions and precancerous polyps cause little or no symptoms. Screening helps detect silent changes early, when management is often easier.

In many cases, yes. Most colorectal cancers start as benign polyps. Colonoscopy allows these to be identified and, when suitable, removed during the same procedure, which may reduce future cancer risk.

Other tests, such as stool-based screening or imaging scans, may be used in some situations. However, they cannot directly examine the digestive lining or remove polyps. If abnormalities are detected, endoscopy is often still required. [Discuss the suitable tests for you]

The scope itself typically takes 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the examination and whether treatment is needed. Including preparation and recovery, you should expect to spend several hours at the clinic.

Both gastroscopy and colonoscopy are performed under sedation, meaning most patients experience little to no discomfort and often have no memory of the procedure. [Ask about our sedation options]

In most cases, yes. Polyps, bleeding points, or certain abnormalities may be managed endoscopically during the same session, depending on clinical findings. Your specialist will act according to what is appropriate for your condition.

For people at average risk with normal findings, colonoscopy is commonly repeated every ten years. If polyps are found or the risk is higher, earlier follow-up may be recommended.

MediSave may be used for gastroscopy or colonoscopy when medically indicated, subject to prevailing limits and guidelines. Insurance coverage varies by policy. Our team can help clarify eligibility and estimated costs during the financial counselling session. [Verify my insurance coverage]
