IMPORTANCE

Why Early Detection Matters

At AliveoMedical, we’ve seen just how proactive measures can equip patients to take charge of their health.

Endoscopic Procedures We Perform

Why You May Need a

Colonoscopy or Gastroscopy

Depending on your symptoms, we may recommend a colonoscopy and/or gastroscopy.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy helps by allowing doctors to visually inspect the colon and rectum for any abnormalities. It aids in:

  • the early detection and treatment of colon cancer
  • identifying and removing polyps
  • evaluating other gastrointestinal conditions like rectal bleeding and iron deficiency anaemia

Gastroscopy

A gastroscopy helps by allowing doctors to directly visualise the upper digestive tract. It is used to:

  • diagnose and treat conditions like heartburn/acid reflux (GERD), ulcers and tumours
  • take tissue samples (biopsies) to diagnose conditions, detect abnormalities and identify infection

Why Image Enhanced Endoscopy (IEE)?

Image Enhanced Endoscopy (IEE) is a procedure designed to improve the visualisation of the gastrointestinal tract. By using specialised light filters and imaging technologies, IEE provides enhanced, high-definition views of the mucosal surfaces, making it easier to identify subtle abnormalities such as early-stage cancers, polyps, inflammation and other digestive issues.

This imaging technique allows for a more accurate and thorough examination, helping our specialists detect and address conditions at their earliest stages. At AliveoMedical, we utilise IEE to ensure that our patients receive accurate diagnoses, leading to tailored treatment plans and improved health outcomes.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for a colonoscopy/ gastroscopy?

Colonoscopy
A clean bowel is crucial during a colonoscopy. Typically, you will need to adopt a low-fibre diet (no vegetables, nuts, and seeds) and drink plenty of water. You will be given strong laxatives to be taken the night before your colonoscopy. The details of the bowel cleansing regime will be given by the clinic staff.

Gastroscopy
Fasting before a gastroscopy is crucial for a safe and thorough examination. It helps prevent food regurgitation and aspiration into the lungs during the procedure, as well as ensuring a clean upper digestive tract. Refrain from eating or drinking for at least 6 hours prior to the procedure. If you take regular medication, consult your doctor for guidance during the fasting period.

After the endoscopy, you will rest in the recovery area whilst the sedation wears off.  Bloating and gas cramps are the most common symptoms you may experience after a colonoscopy.  It is normal for you to expel the excess gas by burping or passing flatus after the procedure, and you should not feel embarrassed about doing so. This will help with bloating and discomfort. After gastroscopy, some people may experience a mild sore throat. This can be easily treated with lozenges. You may also feel sleepy from the sedation. Work, driving, and alcohol should be avoided that day. Most patients can resume a normal diet after the procedure.

Yes – most cases of gastroscopy and colonoscopy are done as day surgery procedures which are eligible for MediSave and insurance claims. For further information, you may check with us.

After completion of the post-procedure documentation by the nursing staff, you will be discharged.  You may be given some medication and hospitalisation leave. A follow-up appointment with the doctor to discuss the findings will be scheduled, usually within 2 weeks. You should return home to rest for the remainder of the day.

Colonoscopy

Preparation and sedation

You receive sedative medications to induce deep relaxation and ensure comfort throughout the procedure.

Insertion of colonoscope

A flexible tube, approximately the diameter of an index finger, is gently inserted through the anus into the colon.

Examination of the colon

The colonoscope is carefully manoeuvred through the colon, with gentle inflation using air or water to aid in visualisation.

Detection of abnormalities

Our expert gastroenterologists examine the colon's lining thoroughly to detect any abnormalities or polyps that may require further evaluation.

Biopsy and polyp removal

During the procedure, tissue samples may be taken for analysis, and any polyps detected can be removed safely and effectively.

Gastroscopy

Preparation and anaesthesia

Before the procedure, a topical anaesthetic spray numbs the throat, and sedative medications are administered for relaxation.

Insertion of gastroscope

A thin, flexible tube (gastroscope) is inserted through the mouth and gently guided down the throat into the oesophagus.

Examination of upper GI tract

The gastroscope allows for a detailed examination of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum, with gentle inflation to enhance visibility.

Sample collection and polyp removal

If necessary, tissue samples are collected for further analysis, and any polyps identified can be removed during the procedure.

Comfort management

Some bloating and discomfort may be experienced, but belching will relieve these symptoms.
